Lauren and Josh’s farm wedding was beautiful and a great example of simple elegance. The balance of country living and high-end wedding details came together perfectly here, thanks to Melonie at Events Unlimited. I love working with her because her taste is impeccable, and the day runs so smoothly that all I have to worry about is taking the photos. I don’t have to worry about coordinating , like I do at some weddings.

Their photos are also a testimony to all the things I love about film – the softness, the mid-tones, the artistic quality, the glow of available light, the details in the clouds on a beautiful day. I love using film, because I really have to think and anticipate every moment, be ready to release the shutter at the precise moment.

I’m also not shooting in a “law of averages” kind of way. In other words, I don’t shoot off 2,000 frames, then whittle them down to 500. For Lauren and Josh’s wedding, I shot approximately 650 frames, and I edited down to 577, which I arranged chronologically and gave to the couple. I also made them a CD of the high-resolution scans from the photo lab, and uploaded images to my web site for viewing. My clients get the best of both worlds – the artistic flair of film, and the convenience of digital scans.

The photo below, of Lauren peeking through the shades, was a candid shot, captured in two frames (one with, and one without, flash; I chose the latter). I try not to “set up” shots. I like to be a sort of voyeur, always lurking in the background, always using a zoom lens. (I don’t even put my short lenses on my cameras any more.) While setting up portraits, I work very hard to make the couple look natural and at ease, a sort of “lost in the moment” kind of style. This gives the photos the natural quality my clients are looking for.

The entire event took place on Josh’s family’s property, which had a lot of variety. The open, manicured lawn served as a ceremony location, the pole barn housed the reception, and the orchard and ancient house were great backdrops for portraits.

I was very blessed with Lauren and Josh, as well as the entire bridal party. Everyone was very laid-back and friendly, and they all loved to have fun. That’s every wedding photographer’s dream, I think.

Lauren and Josh were flexible in their photography style, so I captured some great candid and natural shots, but was also able to pose them in more elegant ways as well. They ended up with a slew of great photos that they loved.

A big thank-you to Lauren and Josh for making us part of their special, beautiful, unique, elegant day!
